What Happens in Vegas...
Wednesday, February 16, 2011 Posted 7:51:37 AM

What Happens in Vegas...

We've heard it millions of times; "What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas", this article is an exception because this bit of news is worth sharing.

I had a wonderful opportunity to meet Christopher Guy at the January 2011 Vegas market.  He is a fascinating gentleman, he spoke of his life and the opportunities and experiences that allowed him to accomplish his dreams.

Read ahead for a inside look of Christopher Guy.

   Christopher Guy

                             Christopher Guy and I

(My apologies for the bad quality of this pic.)

I had the opportunity to meet C. Guy and he was a genuinely nice man, taking time to answer questions and taking photographs with as many people as asked.

He first began his line with a mirror collection and his goal was to create the "Finest mirror company in the world". Today, he takes on a new destiny by creating a range of designer furnishings and therefore creating a signature look.

I love how feminine  and stylish his collection is.

His designs reflect the "French greats of the thirties and forties".

Elegance, sophistication and grace have always transcended cultural boundaries and his aim to transfer these attributes into distinct decorative furnishings.

His aim has been to offer new design concepts that will equally fit into contemporary or classic environments.

Whether it is one piece or several from his collection, they are certainly unique, classy and one of a kind.

        PANTONES COLOR OF THE YEAR

                                             2011

                               HONEYSUCKLE

Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going - perfect to ward off the blues," explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute®. "Honeysuckle derives its positive qualities from a powerful bond to its mother color red, the most physical, viscerally alive hue in the spectrum."

Honeysuckle emboldens us to face everyday troubles with verve and vigor. A dynamic reddish pink, Honeysuckle is encouraging and uplifting elevating our psyche beyond escape, instilling confidence, courage and the spirit necessary to meet the exhaustive challenges that have become part of our everyday life.   Honeysuckle is uplifting and is already putting a smile on my day.

Add a lively flair to interior spaces with Honeysuckle patterned pillows, bedspreads, small appliances and tabletop accessories.

Looking for an inexpensive way to perk up your home? Paint a wall in Honeysuckle for a dynamic burst of energy in the family room, kitchen or hallway.

Honeysuckle is upbeat and dynamic when used on large areas like the entry area of a house or an apartment. It is an appetite and conversation stimulant when used on the dining room walls. In the kitchen, it adds a fun touch on the table in placemats and other linens (patterned or solid), colored glassware, candles and small appliances. Honeysuckle is a great color to cover up shabby kitchen cabinets, or, if that's too much of a color statement for you, try repainting knobs and drawer pulls.

HONEYSUCKLE - Fun, Crazy, Exciting!  What do you think about this years color selection?

Selecting Color Schemes
Monday, December 20, 2010 Posted 8:52:16 PM

Selecting Color Schemes

When it comes to selecting color schemes for your house, there are no certain rules to follow, but there are many factors to take into consideration. Among them are the mood you want to set, the style that suits your home and the direction the room faces. The amount of natural light entering your room is by far the most important factor to consider. To achieve the perfect color scheme all of these factors have to be taken into consideration as a whole and not independently of one another

Color can create a variety of moods and styles to suit every home. Ask yourself: What type of mood am I trying to set? What is the style I want to achieve? Is there a flow of colors from one room to another?

Mood
When decorating a room which will only be used certain times of the day, you will be more interested in setting a mood. For example; a dining room which is primarily used in the evenings, select a color that glows in evening light to ensure you get your desired look.

Style
What style is your home? What is the look you are trying to achieve?

The following are color schemes that suggest mood and style:

Sophisticated: Try warm Grey tones, they have a sophisticated feel and are traditional colors that also work well with contemporary.

Veranda

Relaxing: If warmer tones appeal to you, try warm reds. They have a very warm feel and create relaxing atmospheres.

Traditional Home

Country Feel: Colors with Yellow tones are easy to live with and offer a pretty country feel.

Veranda

Contemporary: Cool Grey tones will give a more hard edged feel with a slight underlying warmth.

A visist to the Wolf, Sub-Zero Manufacturing plant
Tuesday, September 07, 2010 Posted 9:08:30 AM

  Dreaming of a Beautiful Kitchen

I recently returned from a fabulous trip to Madison, WI where I was invited to visit the Sub-Zero & Wolf Training facility and manufacturing plant.  I know this is going to sound crazy but I love visiting factories and learning  how things are made. I find it fascinating and this trip was no exception.

For those of you who are familiar with Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, they pride themselves in being the appliace specialist:  Sub-Zero focuses on food preservation, with a commitment to freshness; Wolf in food preparation.

"Fresh Thinking, Fresh Designs, Fresh Food"

To begin, their facility is beautiful!  The interiors are designed by Jamie Drake and the kitchens are designed by Mick DeGuilio.  Jamie Drake, is known for creating glamorous interiors that are inviting, fresh, and full of color.
Mick DeGuilio is known for creating extraordinary kitchens throughout the US and has published a new book called "Kitchen Centric".www.degiulio.org

The chandeliers hanging in the lobby are creations
by Dale Chihuly, a renowned glass blower, known for his complex, multipart sculptures of dramatic beauty and scale.  What he does with glass blowing is phenomenal.  You can see his work at www.dalechihuly.com

The upper level of the lobby displays an amazing acrylic on canvas by Paul Giovanopoulos, "Bus Stop".

"Bus Stop" is an acrylic on canvas painting of artists, people painted in the style of famous artist or geographical influences in art history.

The facility features a beautiful dining room, bar and pub all designed by Jamie Drake, where you can clearly see his approach to creating glamor that is inviting, fresh and full of color.  The curved walls are a venetian plaster in a raspberry color juxtaposed with an apple green wall.

As the wall curves toward the bar, shades of blue are introduced into a lounge area.

The dining room was my favorite room in the facility.  I especially liked the use of colors and the way they played off of each other and allowed the room to flow from one area to another.

Three beautiful working kitchens and a Living Kitchen displaying all of the Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances available.

The following are all Mick DeGuilio designs.

The French Style Kitchen features a Gas Range, Induction     Cook top and an Electric cook top.

A Contemporary style kitchen and dining area featuring glass blown spears by Dale Chihuly and a water feature.

The main serving Kitchen

The Living Kitchens features all of the appliances made by Sub Zero and Wolf.  www.subzerowolf.com

I am happy to share my experience and my photos with all of you.  I hope that if you are considering a kitchen remodel and are looking for appliances priding themselves in quality that is  made in America you will consider SubZero and  Wolf.

Thank you SubZero, Wolf for a wonderful opportunity!

2010 Charlotte Symphony Designer House
Thursday, July 29, 2010 Posted 10:39:10 AM

       LET'S MEET AT THE MET!!!
1225 Baxter St. off Kings Dr.

www.charlottesymphonyguild.org

It all started last November when I received an invitation to participate in Charlotte's  prestigious Symphony Guild Designer House.  I was thrilled and honored to have been invited.

The selection of the spaces was held in December and the rooms were assigned through a lottery.  My planning began immediately and the room design was submitted for approval in early January.  It was a very quick process because our move in dates were early April and of course we opened on the 17th.

Three units at the Met Terraces where made available to us and my room is the den in Unit 309 designed for the Transitional Urban Family.  With that being said, my design concept was to create a space with someone in mind who would be downsizing and wanting to use their existing furniture and the treasures they had gathered through life.  I wanted the space to feel livable and express the lifestyle of my clients.

The space was designed with a fresh approach to classic uninhibited elegance.

    showhouse

In creating the den I faced  two challenges:  One being no windows to provide natural light and the other being no overhead lighting.  To solve this dilemma, I worked with my friend and reliable faux finisher Amy Sullivan.  I selected the colors I wanted to use in order to lighten the space.  We decided on a venetian plaster and added a metalic finish to help reflect light in the room. The walls and ceiling painted  with an "Oyster Affect"  remind one of the inside of an oyster shell.   By adding a glass iron coffee table, several lamps and up-lighting the dark corners, the room came alive.

    sh corner

The French furniture used was upholstered with fresh new  fabrics from Brunschwig & Fils.  The scale of the furniture allowed the room work.   By adding a new piece, the custom made glass iron table and using old favorite antiques like the English copper samouvoir (Windwood Antiques) as a vase to hold fresh flowers the room became the perfect place to read, watch tv, play a game of cards or simply relax.

    show house tv
In this photograph, you can really appreciate the finish on the walls.

Because no room is complete without beautiful paintings.  I commissioned artist Andy Braitman, Susan Matthews and Diane Virkler to do their magic.  By sharing  the fabric colors and the feel of the room I wanted to accomplish with the artist, they  each created  fabulous pieces that complemented the space.

    showhouse Andy
The painting by Andy Braitman titled "Casa D'Bonvechio" was the focal point in the den.

We all tend to acquire treasures throughout our lives that become important to us.  Whether they be Mother's day gifts from children or special pieces from our travels.

Why do we love certain houses, and why do they seem to love us?  It is the warmth of our individual hearts reflected in our surroundings.
-T. H. Robsjohn-Gibbings

Accessories are what bring our rooms together, express our personalities and reflect our lifestyles.

Adding fresh flowers always brings pleasure to life.

Giving new life to an old piece,  by converting the roller to a lamp and adding a drum shade made this piece one of a kind.

Adding old pieces and a touch of new, was what it took to accomplish the design concept I started out with.

Adding Nature to your holiday decor.
Monday, December 14, 2009 Posted 1:48:16 PM

Some of my favorite holiday decorations are those that I have made with clippings from my garden.  By using a little imagination and greenery found outdoors, you can create a dazzling and charming decor this holiday season.

Five Holiday Decorating Ideas:

1.  Dazzle your entry:

Using different textures of foliage, magnolias and pines and by combining them with Ilex berries, Nandina or holly; you can arrange them together in an urn and place it in your entry way to welcome your guest.

2.  Not just any wreath.

Personalize your wreath by adding a variety of greenery to it.  Greenery such as long leaf eucalyptus, cyprus, nandina and holly berries will all blend together beautifully.  Tie it all up by combining two different ribbons to form a loose bow.

Try something different and do a wreath with long leaf pines and sugar cones.

3.  Your centerpiece

Take a basket with an interesting shape, one that will complement your table, and add groupings of different materials. Mix it up.  Add some fruit like apples or pomegranates or oranges are adorned with cloves to the arrangement.  Not only will it look beautiful, but it will give your home a lovely scent.

4.. What about a Kissing ball?

Use copper wiring to form a ball and insert rosemary sprigs around the form to create a simple, beautiful and elegant kissing ball.  Finish with a double faced satin ribbon and hang it from a light fixture at your entry way.

5.  Dress up your mantle

Arrange your cuttings in varying lenghts  by inserting them into an oais block that is secured into a container complementing your mantle.  Place single Poinsettia stems in a glass cylinder and set it among  the stocking hangers.

Redefining Luxury

I recently attended the fall event at the Atlanta Decorative Art Center (ADAC), presented by Veranda, during which a panel discussion addressed the topic of redefining luxury.  In order to redefine luxury, we must first define it. Luxury is the enjoyment of the best and most costly amenities, almost always unnecessary.

In today’s economy luxury has had to be redefined, and now carries the weight of social responsibility.  Instead of superfluous and expensive, it is about authenticity and value.  Ask yourself: What is important and authentic to you?  What is it that you value and is going to make you truly happy?  That is luxury redefined for your lifestyle.
